Act V: Grapes

Fruit: Grapes

Notes: Green, Seedless. Ripe, perhaps a little too so. They fall off the vine very easily
Expected result: Low splat co-efficient, Medium quantity of juice

The Juicing

The Juicer Beforehand
The Result

As expected, the splat co-efficient of the grapes is low, probably due to their size and softness.

Also as expected, the quantity of juice produced was medium (around 350ml). This is probably also due to the size of the grapes.

Juice Produced

The Result

Splat Co-efficient:: Low
Splat Rating: 2 / 5
Juice Raiting: 3 / 5

Does it go splat? NOT REALLY

Act IV: Tomatoes

Fruit: Tomatoes

Notes: Spanish, Ripe. Not green or soft.
Expected result: Low splat co-efficient, Low quantity of juice

The Juicing

The Juicer Beforehand
The Result

As expected, the splat co-efficient of the tomatoes was low. This is probably due to the soft nature of the fruit, and the soft skin.

Contrary to expectations, quite a bit of juice was produced (around 300ml). This is probably because the juicer could completely destroy the fruit.

The Result

Splat Co-efficient:: Low
Splat Rating: 2 / 5
Juice Raiting: 3 / 5

Does it go splat? NO

Act III: Braeburn Apples

Fruit: Braeburn Apples

Notes: Ripe and very crisp
Expected result: High splat co-efficient, High quantity of juice

The Juicing

The Juicer Beforehand
The Result

Although the splat co-efficient is high, the rate of splatter is not as high as expected. This may be due to the apples not quite fitting down the feeding tube.

The amount of juice produced was also not as high as expected (around 350ml). This may be to do with the variety of apple, and crispness.

Juice Produced

The Result

Splat Co-efficient: High
Splat Rating: 4 / 5
Juice Raiting: 3 / 5

Does it go splat? YES

Act II: Strawberries

Fruit: Strawberries

Notes: British. Ripe, but only just. Some are still partially green
Expected result: Low splat co-efficient, Low quantity of juice

The Juicing

The Juicer Beforehand
The Result

As expected, due to the size and softness of the fruit, the splat co-efficient is low, generating only a small amount of splatter around the juicer.

Contrary to expectations, the amount of juice produced was fairly high - around 450ml. This is probably because the juicer was able to completely destroy the fruit.

Juice Produced

The Result

Splat Co-efficient: Low
Splat Rating: 2 / 5
Juice Raiting: 4 / 5

Does it go splat? NOT REALLY

Act I: Pears

Fruit: Conference Pears

Notes: Ripe, but not overly so. Have not yet gone soft or mushy
Expected result: Moderate splat co-efficient, one or two cupfuls of juice

The Juicing

The Juicer Beforehand
The Result

Contrary to expectations, the splat co-efficient of the pears is high, probably due to the soft nature of the fruit and the low speed setting of the juicer.

Juicing took just a few seconds per pear but, also contrary to expectations, did not produce much juice (around 400ml).

Juice Produced

The Result

Splat Co-efficient: High
Splat Rating: 4 / 5
Juice Raiting: 2 / 5

Does it go splat? YES

Welcome!

Welcome to "Does it go splat?"

The sole purpose of this blog is to document the splat-coefficient (if that's not a scientific term, it should be) of various fruits and other things as they're fed through a juicer.

The juicer in question is a Phillips HR1861, which has a 700W electric motor and two speed settings:
The method of juicing in this case is a centrifuge with a serrated blade on the bottom. The fruit (or other objects - note that it's not recommended to feed solid or explosive objects through it) is pushed down from the top onto the spinning bowl below, thereby extracting the juice. Due to extreme forces, the fruit is liable to explode inside the juicer - thus going splat.

Because of the design of the juicer, the pulp flies upwards towards the collection bucket - but a large majority of it sticks to the top cover.

This is what we shall be measuring in this blog.
